The ancient shire town of Monmouth has a fascinating past and a wealth of historical and natural attractions. Originally a Roman settlement called Blestium, and the birthplace of Henry V in 1387, Monmouth has fiercely guarded the Welsh heartland from invaders across the Wye Valley for almost 1000 years. The town is entered (though only on foot, now) through a spectacular 13th-century bridge across the River Monmow with a unique fortified gatehouse. With all its' medieval streets almost completely intact, visitors are transported to a world of 11th-century priories, including the old market in Agincourt Square and the Shire Hall, almost completely unchanged since the trials of the Chartist leaders. Monmouth also features a popular and lively town centre with a rich and diverse variety of shops (both local & chain-stores), as well as a museum and a castle to boot, all within in a short walk from The Mayhill Hotel.
